Good Faith Performs Good Works (James 1:22-25)

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:22-25)

Saint James describes a believer in Jesus name, who just hears or reads God’s word but does not do anything with it, like a person who looks at himself in a mirror, recognizing all that is about him, but then goes away and forgets what he looks like. 

Even maybe we know it by heart and share it with others, but not letting it transform us and live it. 

This is a notable problem within the community of believers around us. 

People say they believe, but it is not visible in the way they led their lives. 

St. James draws our attention that just believing in Jesus’ name and reading His word is not all what we have to know and do. 

But we have to receive Jesus in us in the Holy Spirt. 

How? 

By obeying Jesus’ word we read in the Gospel and live it. 

How? 

By surrendering everything in us, our soul, mind, and body to the work of the Holy Spirit to sanctify us and transform us to the image of Christ, our creator. 

When we eat and swallow His word, it will permeates every tissue in us and make us like Him. 

In verse twenty-five, he states that he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and do it and is not a forgetful hearer but doer of the word, this one will be blessed in what he does. 

We, the believer in Jesus name, must receive Jesus in us, and abide in Him, so that we be doer of His word.
