Run To Jesus Instead Of From Him (Luke 15:11-20)
“A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’
So he divided to them his livelihood.
And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.
But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.
Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.
“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
Make me like one of your hired servants.”
“And he arose and came to his father.” (Luke 15:11-20)
Christians sometime think that the way to be like Jesus is difficult.
But this is actually a lie that the devil throws into our minds to feel heavy and uncomfortable obeying God’s word in the Gospel.
The way is difficult when we rely on our own strength to walk the path.
We must know that it is the work and the power of the Holy Spirit that will sanctify us and make us a new creation.
So what is our role in this process?
To open our hearts and minds to hear and obey God’s word to be able to receive the Holy Spirt and abide in Him.
Obeying the word of God guides us everyday and reveals to us the will of God for our lives.
While walking this path we sometimes resist, rebel, and run away from Jesus.
We believe the lie of the devil and accept his temptations and push Jesus away, thinking that living away from Him is the way of our freedom and enjoying all kinds of pleasures that will make our lives better.
It seems easier to make our own way than to trust and obey Jesus’ words in the Gospel.
Like the prodigal son who left all the riches of his father and ran away obeying the voice of the devil.
He had experienced life in the bottomless, dark pit of despair.
After sinking deeper and deeper in the dark pit he realized that his father‘s love is the true love.
When he came to himself, he said, I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
We all must rise up and go to our savior to save us from ourselves and lift us out of the hole we had dug for ourselves.
Our lives away from Jesus is not life but death.
We could not outrun Jesus, our Lord and savior.
He choses us to be His children and pursues us until we surrender to His call of loving grace.
Let me tell you, that no matter how hard we have tried to push Him away, our Lord relentlessly pursued us.
We must submit and obey His word, even when it leads us to act contrary to all feeling and instinct.
Total surrender enables us to abide in the comforting arms of our savior’s grace and mercy, as well as in His infinite love and protection.
Amen.
