Confession Deepens Our intimacy with The Lord (Romans 10:8-12)
“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”
(that is, the word of faith which we preach):
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” (Romans 10:8-12)
Confession plays two roles in our lives, as Christians.
There is a confession of sin, and a confession of faith.
St. Paul in his letter to the Romans, is drawing our attention that confession is not just a word that we utter with our mouth but it comes first from a heart that believes that Jesus Christ, is the Son of God, and Father God has raised Him from the dead.
Believing in Jesus from all our heart will lead us to receiving Him in the Holy Spirit.
When we receive Him, we will rise with Him, and have His power over sin and death.
We will receive His eternal life that overcomes death.
So when we declare that Jesus is our Lord, and confess this truth with our mouth we will be saved.
As st. Paul explains to us that with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
The other role of confession is confessing our sins.
When we confess that we have sinned and we repent, Jesus will forgive us.
This action of confession and repentance will let the Holy Spirit enter in us to wash us from the effect of sin and give us the power to reject sin.
By confessing our sin we expose the evil spirit to the light of the Holy Spirit to abolish it.
St John in his first epistle tells us,”If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1John 1:9)
We all must say with the Psalmist, “Finally, I confessed all my sins to you Lord, and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.’
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.” (Psalm 32:5)
The confession of sin and of faith let the devil flee and helps us have more intimate relationship with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
