Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:18-23)
“The path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.
My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.
Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:18-23)
We, the Christians, know by heart from the word of God in the Gospel, that we must guard our hearts unless any temptation would lead us to sin.
We know that sin separates us from our Lord, Jesus Christ, and leads to our spiritual death.
So we all are keen to close all channels that open a way to sin.
But we never realize that emotions can lead us to open the door for the devil, our enemy, to enter deeply into our hearts and receive his evil spirits in us.
We think that being emotional by nature is a good thing.
Unfortunately, the devil is so wicked and he plays on our emotions to fill us with his spirits.
`Of course, there are many times when our emotions got the best of us, and we are pulled under and tossed with anxiety, chaos, and worry.
All these are evil sprits that attack our emotions.
We know that we have to run to Jesus and defeat these spirits in His precious name.
But we do not know that sometimes these spirits are in the people around us, like a coworker, a friend, or a family member, who are going through a dark time or just needed to vent.
We think that it is a good thing to be around and share their feelings and not realize that we find ourselves taking their negativity and anxiety and inevitably feel weighed down by these emotions.
We wanted to to help them by bearing their burdens and be compassionate toward them as the Gospel says.
Yes, it is a good thing to share others’ feelings, as the word of God says, but we must be aware to take ourselves and them and go to Jesus.
At the end Jesus is the only One that relieves them from all these negative emotions.
The best thing we can do is simply stand with them in their pain they are experiencing and point them to the only One who can bring wholeness, peace, and comfort.
As for us, we must control how we react to all these negative emotions and keep our own emotions in check.
Before we become involved in someones else’s problem and his emotional experience, we must pray and intercede for them asking Jesus’ wisdom and guidance to what to say and do to help them.
We must guard our hearts to not be open to negative emotions but ask the help of the Holy Spirit to give us the right words and the right actions when walking with others through their hard times and trials.
Above all, we focus our eyes on Jesus, guard our hearts and keep Jesus the center of it, and relax in His hands.
Amen.
