Mercy Is God’s Attribute (Ephesians 2:4-9)

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:4-9)

Jesus is the Spirit of mercy.

We live in a fallen world and its prince is the devil.

He came to steal, destroy and kill us.

One of his attributes is revenge.

The devil does not have mercy but he is full of evil and he throws in us the spirit of revenge which is the opposite of the Spirit of mercy.

Mercy is one of God’s attributes.

It is kindness, forward forgiveness, and empathy.

Mercy chooses not to be offended, and compassionately sees a hurting heart behind hurtful words.

Jesus’ mercy is reflected in the cross, where He confronted the devil and his spirits and defeated them for us.

Coming to our world to save us is an expression of His mercy and love for us.

He defeated death and sin for us.

Giving us His Holy Spirit to indwell in us is a great gift and an expression of His mercy and love for us.

As we read in the epistle to Titus, chapter three,” But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:5-7)

So let us all seek to be bearer of the Holy Spirit to be filled with Jesus’ mercy and love.

Amen.
