We Must Not Give In To Angry Feelings And Justify Them (Mathew 5:21-24)
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.
Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.
First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.“ (Mathew 5:21-24)
When we face difficult challenges, get abused by someone, or get hurt by others, we automatically get frustrated and very angry.
Anger is an emotion we all deal with in our personal and professional lives, and it is not always easy to figure out the best way to deal with it.
In the Gospel there are many stories about Jesus getting angry.
When we read them we think that being angry is not a sin and it is a normal reaction to people who insult or hurt us.
This is not right at all, the spirit of anger is the spirit of the devil not of Jesus.
We must all know that there is a difference between righteous anger and human anger.
The word of God in the epistle of St. James, chapter one, says, ”Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry for man’s anger does not not bring about the righteous life that God desires.” (James 1: 19-20)
Righteous anger is the godly reaction to sin.
Jesus was angry without sinning when He encountered unbelief and hypocrisy.
In the Gospel of St. Mark, chapter three, tells us that Jesus, “After looking around them in anger, grieved by the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man,” stretch out your hand He stretched it out and his hand was restored (Mark 3:5)
Jesus addressed anger in love.
His anger was not against man but against sin that tempts man.
When He gets angry, He does not rebuke man but rebukes the sin that controls man.
He is the One who told us to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us, and pray for those who persecute us.
That we may be sons of our Father in heaven.
He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Jesus calls us not to seek revenge when mistreated, but go to Him and He will help us in the Holy Spirit, to forgive those who sinned against us as He forgave our sins.
He will reward us and fill us with His life, peace, and love.
We must not continue to give in to angry feelings and justify them.
We have the opportunity to treat conflict and injustice as an opportunity for the Holy Spirit in us to work and bring out His fruits in us rather than we allow conflict to bring out the worst in us.
We learn from the word of God in the Gospel to self-control our emotions and it is important not to let anger control us.
We are called to address anger in love.
Jesus is warning us that the emotion of anger is dangerous and we should be careful and rebuke this spirit.
The best way to overcome the spirit of anger is to forgive others and relay on the peace of the Holy Spirit.
We have the power to forgive as Jesus forgave us.
Amen.
