We Should Face Fear With Faith (2 Timothy 1:7-9)

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.” (2 Timothy 1:7-9)

All humans have a built-in response and reaction when they feel afraid.

They automatically either fight back or flee away.

But Jesus Himself pointed at this weakness we have.

He always admonishes who fears and say where is your faith in me.

Why you do not believe my words.

St. Paul is reminding his disciple Timothy and all of us, saying, that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind.

Fear is the devil’s spirit which should be faced with the Spirit of faith in Father God and His Son, Jesus Christ.

He sent Him to save us and release us from all the bondages of the evil spirits.

When we read the Gospel we will find numerous exhortations of Jesus reminding us, His children, to not be afraid.

He gave us the power in His Holy Spirit to fight back all fearful thoughts.

He is our strength and salvation.

He fought this fight for us on the cross and defeated the spirit of fear.

He gave us His victory in the Holy Spirit.

He promised us that He goes with us and never forsake us.

One of the most inspiring examples of this unshakeable faith in the face of fear is found in the book of Acts chapter sixteen, when apostle Paul and Silas were captured, tortured, and imprisoned after sharing the Gospel with the people.

They have been beaten with rods and were shackled in chains.

What a horrible and terrifying situation.

Yet, Paul and Silas did not attempt to flee or fight, but called upon Jesus Christ, their savior, who is the only One who could battle on their behalf.

Our Lord, Jesus, set them free literally.

Jesus can do the impossible.

Rely on Him and face fear with faith in Jesus Christ.

I myself consider fear is my enemy that could never be defeated.

But I have seen my Lord, Jesus Christ, has so proven His faithfulness through trial after trial and He did set me free from all the devil’s schemes.

Not only He fought for me and resolved all the problems that the devil did to me, but also I am shocked by His strength and power to set me fee from the bondage of fear that I lived with for many years.

I have faith that Jesus can do the same for you also.

Amen.
