Do Not Love Anyone More Than Jesus (Mathew 10:37-39)
“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.
And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.
But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”
And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.
But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38:42)
We can see how Martha tried so hard to prepare everything before Jesus’ arrival.
What Martha did is a very good thing and no one has this responsibility and can do all that except her.
But the problem is that she felt angry and indignant at everyone there and she felt that she had been taken advantage of.
She became tired of always being responsible, ensuring that everything had been taken care of perfectly.
She was burning out and becoming bitter. Many of us get this feeling like Martha and face this inner struggle.
Our problem is that we think that we either choose to serve and do our responsibilities and be burned out or choose to relax and sit at the feet of Jesus.
However, the healing to burnout is spending time at the feet of Jesus.
He said to Martha that her problem is that she is worried and troubled about many things.
He advised her with the solution to the problem, which is, to depend on Him and not on her effort and decision.
So the only way to avoid becoming overwhelmed with all the responsibilities we have is to learn to do all this in the power of the Holy Spirit.
We must ask the Holy Spirit to guide us what to do every day and spend more time in meditating in God’s word and prayer to get the strength of the Holy Spirit and not ours.
He will lead us to do everything He wants us to do and should do.
He is the One who will make the balance in our life to work hard, serve and relax.
So it is not about giving up responsibilities, but instead entrusting them to Jesus in the Holy Spirit.
Burnout comes from trying to shoulder all of the responsibilities alone.
Jesus said in the Gospel of Mathew, chapter eleven, “come to me all you wha are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mathew 11:28)
To rest means to go to Jesus and to sit at His feet and hearing His voice and filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit.
It is not to sit chatting with friends or watching TV.
To relax means to spend time alone with Him, soaking in His wisdom and resting in His hands.
Jesus Himself when He was on our world He often stepped away from the crowd to pray.
We cannot give any service or work from an empty cup but we must be filled by the Holy Spirit to give from the overflow we have.
We must renew our minds and spirits by hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit and His wisdom.
Burnout occurs when we try to give while we are empty and depleted.
May Jesus help us to lay all our burdens on Him and relax at His feet.
Amen.
