Today's Devotional

We Have To Discern Evil In This Dark World (1Peter 5:6-9)

“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” (1Peter 5:6-9)

We, the believers in Jesus Christ, are the target of the devil, our enemy, all the time. 

He walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. 

All his aim is to to deceive us and pull us down to his pit. 

He makes many things around us to look good or seem innocent, but on the contrary they are traps that we easily can fall in. 

So we must pray for spiritual discernment and live without fear through Christ’s power. 

We have to arm ourselves spiritually to not react in fear to all the trials and temptations that the devil throws in our way all the time and not to cave to his deceptions. 

Ignoring the devil’s tactics is not a bliss but it is a spiritual blindness in a world where spiritual discernment is a vital weapon. 

St. Paul reminds us in his epistle to the Ephesians, chapter six, that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the power of this dark world. 

He continues saying that what we are fighting against are spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 

This is a very explicit description of what we are facing all the time in this corrupted, dark, and evil world. 

We must pray askng the Holy Spirit to give us the gift of discernment and coherency to know what is sincerely of the light and what is not. 

We must fight our good fight knowing that He who is with us is greater than those who are against us. 

We know that we are not alone in our fight. 

Praying for Jesus to reveal what we cannot see and discern all things and people around us, offers us access to not fall prey to the schemes of our enemy. 

It also enables us to navigate the world with Godly wisdom. 

To discern what is right and light we must pray all the time seeking the truth through the Holy Spirit. 

Through the Holy Spirit Jesus reveals to those who seek Him all the knowledge they need to understand and discern all things around and gives them the wisdom to how they would react to them. 

One of the most important things that we must realize is that things of the darkness can control us not through our participation in them, but in our fear of them. 

If the devil cannot get us to participate in things that are genuinely opposed to the light, he may tempt us to be afraid of any and all things, which is a method of controlling us still. 

Fear is a consuming and a controlling spirit. 

So we must get rid of the evil spirit of fear to be able to receive the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of freedom and discernment.
