Be Gentle Even Under Stress (James 1:19-21)

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
(James 1:19-21)

The words that our tongue utters are so powerful, they can either make a situation better or worse. 
So, we all must be careful about the words we choose especially when we are stressful. 
Every day we deal with the stress of life’s pressures, and we may be tempted to speak in harsh ways. 
But it’s important to avoid being harsh when we are feeling stressed. 
In the book of Proverbs, chapter fifteen, we read, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” 
We need the help of the Holy Spirit to be able to respond to pressures in ways that relieve tension instead. 
As soon as we feel angry or stressed we go directly to Jesus asking His wisdom and comfort in the Holy Spirit instead of escalating it. 
St. James is advising us to give ourselves time to take a break to think before we speak in stressful situations. 
Even taking a few deep breaths before speaking can help us choose better words. 
We have to train ourselves when we face the spirit of stress or anger, to pray silently for the Holy Spirit’s help to choose the gentle words, right when we catch ourselves about to say something harsh. 
Gentleness is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, so we can always count on the Holy Spirit to help us be more gentle. 
We have to keep in mind that choosing gentle words doesn’t mean that we are weak. 
We can still speak God’s truth, set boundaries, and address real issues with gentleness. 
The Holy Spirit can lead us to speak with a strong gentleness that will empower us to deal with pressures gracefully and inspire others to join us to try to solve problems.
