Jesus Is My Hiding Place (Psalm 32:1-7)
“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long.
For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.
I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You in a time when You may be found; Surely in a flood of great waters they shall not come near him.You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.“ (Psalm 32:1-7)
So many people wander from God, usually because they thought freedom is found elsewhere.
They succumb to the devil’s lies, telling them that their true life would be found away from God.
But unfortunately the devil’s lies lead them to nothing except the feeling of emptiness, despair, and sadness.
Shame and guilt come crashing in and of course, they do not find the hope and joy they thought they were pursuing.
And the first action they do is to go and hide from God, the creator of heaven and earth.
When we feel overwhelmed by our sin, it can be easy to feel that we must hide from God.
We think that we need to be distant.
We think that if we come close to Father God, He will visit us with vengeance and wrath.
After all we have done and the sin that clings to us, why would God love us and receive us.
Unfortunately this is the false picture of God that some people have in their mind.
They feel like God is not for them, so they hide from Him.
It can be an isolating experience.
It can be an experience in which we believe ourselves to be abandoned and unloved.
When we hide from God, not only are we left struggling with the guilt of our sin, but we also feel desperately alone.
But Father God did not want us to parish and saved us from all these lies.
He did send His incarnated word, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, to our world to reveal to us His true picture, His love to us and to give us His eternal life to overcome sin and death.
So instead of us hiding FROM God, we hide IN His Son, our Lord and Savior.
Wherein David the psalmist wrestles with his sin, trying to manage it himself, cover it over, and sweep it under the proverbial rug, he describes how his sin would sap his strength.
But a change comes to him when he acknowledges his sin before God.
And what comes rushing into his life is not divine anger, wrath, or dismissal, but forgiveness and love.
When we allow ourselves to be covered by God's love and have God’s love be the defining marker of our life, we no longer feel the need to hide from God.
David describes how we should hide in God.
David writes, “You are my hiding place, and you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”
Hiding is a journey into the heart of God, a heart filled with compassion, delight, protection, and love.
Hiding in God means that we dare to accept the loving acceptance of God in our lives.
When we hide in God, we are assured of God’s delight in us.
God surrounds us with grace.
This means no part of our life is untouched by God’s mercy.
Thank You God for loving us and sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to save us.
Amen.
