Waiting For The Lord In Faith And Hope (1Thessalonians 1:2-5)

“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.
For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-5)

In today’s verses Apostle Paul is encouraging the church of Thessalonians to wait for the Lord’s second coming with patience serving Him with hope.
Jesus Himself urged His disciples in His parable of the faithful servant, in the Gospel of Luke, chapter twelve, saying, ”Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,” (Luke 12:35)
We, the children of God, must serve our Lord, waiting for His second coming, with patience and joy.
Like a child waiting for his father’s return, working hard and faithfully in His farm who left him responsible for.
We all must be waiting with great longing for the return of the risen Christ motivated by a combination of love and hope.
While we are waiting we serve.
For those who have faith, the word of God in the Gospel comes “not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction”
(v. 5).
This combination of truth and power enables those who wait for Jesus to imitate His life (v. 6).
This is not a matter of trying to live up to Jesus’ example.
It is living in the power of His resurrection.
Faith means turning away from the old man to the new life in Jesus.
The Thessalonians turned away from idols “to serve the living and true God” (vv. 9–10).
Paul emphasizes the contrast between the empty promise offered by false idols that the Thessalonians had previously served and the living hope of the true God.
It is a turning towards Jesus.
The very act of turning towards Jesus sets us on a path away from the one which is not of God.
Amen.
