Trials & Spiritual Warfare (Ephesians 6: 12-13)

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6: 12-13)
Living in a fallen and sinful world makes us naturally face trials every day.
We struggle with a lot of false wisdom, fake friendship, fake love, etc,.
These struggles are not necessarily caused by direct spiritual opposition from the devil, but are part of the human condition.
We might be sick with a virus because of the polluted air, go through relationship conflicts because of misunderstandings, or lose a job due to economic downturns.
But our Spiritual warfare is a personal and intentional attack from the devil to every one of us specifically.
Unlike everyday trials, which come into our lives from natural circumstances, spiritual warfare occurs when evil spirits actively work to derail our faith and relationships with our Lord.
We need to discern the difference by the power of the Holy Spirit in us, so we can identify the source of the situation we are struggling with.
Once we know the source, we can determine the best response with Jesus’ guidance.
When dealing with everyday trials, we may need to ask the Lord for patience, wisdom, and perseverance.
But if we are facing a personal spiritual warfare, we should ask Him for the strength to stay strong in faith and rely on Him to help us in the Holy Spirit.
The war that the devil wages against the believers in the name of Jesus, is a very aggressive devilish attempt to destroy their faith.
But every day trials that they face usually strengthen their faith and make it stronger.
It changes the believer’s character.
It makes him more wise, patient, and resilient.
St. James in his letter encourages us that everyday trials can build our character, saying, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 12-4)
Trials often make our relationship with the Lord more stronger because we are dependable on Him more in the Holy Spirit.
But the spiritual warfare that the devil wages against us always tries to create doubt, fear, and confusion in us.
That often leads us to question God’s goodness and His promises.
St. Peter warns us in his first letter, chapter five, saying, “Be alert and of sober mind.
Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
When we recognize that we’re under spiritual attack, we need to respond with spiritual weapons.
We must put on the full armor of God to defend ourselves.
Instead of giving into fear, we should declare God’s truth over our circumstances and rely on God’s help to stay strong in our faith.
Amen.
