He Loved Us First (1John 4: 17-22)
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.
But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
We love Him because He first loved us.
If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.” (1John 4:17-22)
Father God loves us.
He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, incarnated, taking a body like ours, to confront sin and death on the cross and defeated them.
He created us on His image and likeness.
He created us to live life abundantly and eternally to enjoy being with Him and be blessed with all the fruits of his Spirit.
All those who believe in Him, receive Him, and abide in Him have eternal life.
He loves us, and because of His love, we know how to love back.
He revealed His love in many ways throughout the centuries, offering direction when we have struggled to know our way, fighting for us against our enemies, healing the sick, encouraging the discouraged, and restoring dignity to those who are ashamed.
He loves those whom the world deems unloveable.
He gave us His overcoming power over all evil spirits.
The love of God is our greatest treasure, providing comfort, hope, and even discipline.
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
If He is in us and we are in Him, we do not fear because he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
We cannot know love unless we know Jesus Christ, because He does not merely represent or reflect love, but He is love.
To love well, we must open ourselves to the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, sanctify us, and make us new.
We must receive the new nature.
This means we cannot truly understand love until we understand the nature of God.
Love does not mean “being nice” or “doing good things,” but it is giving yourself freely and without waiting for something in return.
We cannot fully or consistently love in our own strength; we need the Holy Spirit.
Love is active which tells us that people who love are more than well-wishers.
They go out of their way to actively help other people, not to earn God’s love, but because they are “of” God through Christ, and they see through Jesus’ loving eyes.
Real love is a love that obeys and serves God.
When we accept and receive Jesus in us, He transforms us into his likeness.
That means we are able to love honestly and truly, not as a matter of duty.
That love has manifestation, which is to love one another as He loved us, to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God.
Amen.
