Be Convinced That Jesus Is The Only One Who keeps Us Safe (Mark 4: 36-41)
“Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was.
And other little boats were also with Him.
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.
And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!”
And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful?
How is it that you have no faith?”
And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (Mark 4:36-41)
In this passage we just read, we see that although the disciples knew that Jesus is the Son of God, yet they did not have a clue about the extend of His power.
They were so fearful when their boat was being tossed around in a storm.
They feared they would die even when Jesus right there in the boat with them.
They saw Jesus in the midst of the storm was in peace and did not wake up.
They were worried that Jesus did not care if they drown.
After Jesus stood up and rebuked the wind and waves and the storm immediately became still, He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid?”
Do you still have no faith?”
We all struggle with control issues.
It is in our fallen and sinful human nature.
We think that if we install security system for our homes, and take all sorts of precautionary measures to protect it, and protect our children and possessions, we will be safe and feel secured.
But unfortunately, after all what we do to feel safe and secured, we still feel anxious and worried.
The fact that we, who believe in God, tend to be just as stressed and anxious as those who do not, this indicates there is a disconnect between professing a belief in God, and truly knowing Him and what He is capable of.
Our anxiety level is directly related to our faith, in Who God is, and what He is capable of.
The more we get to know Him, be united with our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit, the more we will be convinced He can handle anything that comes our way.
Abiding in Jesus and receiving the new nature, as we surrender to Him, we can rest in the fact that He is in control of everything, even when it doesn’t appear so.
Our anxiety level will surely change when we are convinced He can control all we think we must, and all know we cannot.
Ultimately our Lord is the One who protects and keeps us safe.
Be convinced He’s the one who keeps us safe, and we would not fear for our health or wellbeing.
He instructs us how we can live without worry and it straight out tells us not to be anxious about anything, because we have a God who cares for us.
We, as believers, we find it easier to trust God with our eternal life than with our everyday life and all that causes us anxiety.
There are times when we can get caught up in our circumstances and forget Who God is, what He’s capable of, and how much He is faithful and so good to His children.
I believe that might be the reason that so many of us experience an anxious mindset.
We have yet to apply what we know about our Lord Jesus Christ, to our real-life situations, and remember that He is absolutely capable of getting us through whatever we face minute by minute, day by day.
Being in complete unity with Christ, surrendering everything to Him, that can make us far less anxious about whatever is happening to rock our world.
He will not let our foot slip, and He who watches over us will not slumber.
When we realize how God is tasked with our personal safety, and we are in better hands with Him than with anyone or anything else, we will rest in His peace and love.
Amen.
