Fight Past Sin, And Do Not Sin Anymore (John 8: 11-16)
“And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world.
He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true.”
Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.” (John 8: 11-16)
Jesus, our Lord and Savior, said that he did not come to condemn us but whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:15)
He also said, in the Gospel of John, chapter five, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” (John 5:24)
In this passage that we have just read, Jesus reassures us that He does not condemn us, but on the condition that we repent of sin and do not sin no more.
Some believers may think that no matter how wrong we are, we are not condemned because we believe in the name of Christ.
But of course this is not true.
Christ does not encourage sin, but He has given us the perfect tool “which is His almighty name”, to overcome sin.
Jesus came to our world, taking a body like ours, and He confronted the devil and his sinful spirits and defeated them on the cross.
Christ assures us that He does not condemn us if we repent of sin and reject it.
If we want to grow in faith and be true children of God, we must reject sin and receive the new nature in the Holy Spirit.
There needs to be a mindset shift, a change in our behavior.
Many of us have habits or thoughts that we know aren’t exactly holy.
We must not be conformed to the world, but be holy as our Father in heaven is.
We have to fight past sin in order to cultivate future virtue.
Sin is the very thing that keeps us feeling separated from God.
Jesus said that he who loves Him must obey His commands.
Amen.
