Israel’s Rejection And God’s Purpose (Romans 9:6-13)

“But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect.
For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.”
That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed.
For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son.
And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), it was said to her, “The older shall serve the younger.”
As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.” (Romans 9:6-13)

St. Paul had many opponents who accused him of failing to love his fellow Israelites.
So in this passage, he is telling to the Israelites, that God is faithful to all Israel, but the issue is this, who is a true child of Abraham?
It is not Abrahams’s children of the flesh, his natural or biological offspring, but his true children are the children of the promise, that is, those who are in Isaac, which means, faithful believers.
Those who believes in God and His Son, Jesus Christ, and obey Him, are the true children of God.
Those who have the strong faith and trust in God’ words and promises like Abraham, are his true children.
Because Isaac was miraculously conceived through God’s promise, which Abraham believed, it is those who continue in his faith who are Abraham’s true offspring.
St. Paul continued to explain to them the purpose of God to the whole creation.
Both Jacob and Esau were called for salvation, for God loves all equally.
The phrase of “Esau I have hated” does not mean God did not love Esau.
Rather, God foresaw the wickedness that Esau would choose and hated it.
Likewise, God foresaw Jacob’s faith and obedience and knew Jacob would serve His purpose.
Those who have faith in Father God, and His Son Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, are the ones who trust His words and obey His commands.
Those are the true children of God who will receive His promises and fulfill His purpose.
Amen.
