Protection Against Enemies (Ephesians 6:13-17)
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”(Ephesians 6:13-17)
We live in a very dark and corrupted world.
The Gospel tells us that the whole world, and not part of it, lies under the sway of the wicked one.
Jesus said that that the prince of this world is the devil, and that is why the world is full of darkness and death.
We, the Christians, know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ, and this is the true God and eternal life.
Jesus told us in the Gospel of John to remember His word that He said to us, that If the world persecuted Him, it will also persecute us.
Why?
Because they do not know God who sent Him.
So we, the believers, because of the name of Jesus, are persecuted and people sometimes come against us.
People betray us or try to destroy our lives in various ways.
But our Lord, Jesus, promised us that He will defend us and protect us against our enemies.
We must always declare that the Lord is our light and our salvation, whom shall we fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of our lives, of whom shall we be afraid?”
God’s presence eliminates fear because if He is with us who can be against us.
God’s power overwhelms any possible threat we face, whether physical or spiritual.
We must put our trust in Him.
When the wicked advance against us to devour us, it is our enemies and foes who will stumble and fall.
Since Jesus, the Son of God, dwells in us and we abide in Him, we can rest assured that an enemy will receive their own violent intent, and no weapon formed against us will succeed.
Even when it appears that evil will win, we have hope and trust in God’s promises.
As David the Psalmist says, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart.”
We must remember, however, that people aren’t our true enemies.
We have a spiritual foe, the devil, and he seeks to destroy us.
Our fight isn’t with people, so we shouldn’t seek their harm even though they might seek ours.
St. Paul talks about how God empowers us with spiritual weapons to fight with truth and love.
In all attacks against us, we know that God fights for us against all enemies, whether physical or spiritual.
Amen.
