Preach The Name Of Jesus (Luke 14:12-14)

“Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.
But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” (Luke 14:12-14)

As Christians, Jesus calls us to welcome people in His name.
Welcoming here means to preach His name to those who do not know Him.
We preach His name to those who need to be healed spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
But, unfortunately, we always spend our time with our family or with friends that we feel comfortable with and have fun with.
We surround ourselves with the people we enjoy, and if we welcome others well, then, in turn, they welcome us.
And so, we open our homes and enjoy times of fellowship or fun.
We host bible studies and dinners.
We build up our blessed small groups.
To welcome people, as Jesus does, is to reach out to the people we would rather not associate with and the people who don’t belong to our friends groups or our inner circle.
In these verses we just read, Jesus advises us not to invite our friends, because we will be repaid.
But we have to invite those who are in need of Jesus’ life and His healing.
We preach Jesus to the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
These people would be bothersome.
They are a symbol of people who were dependent and could not contribute.
But this is the call of Christ.
We must be willing to preach Christ to others.
Preach Jesus to those who are annoying, the critical, the bothersome, and the unfriendly.
Jesus says, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.”
To welcome others in Jesus’ name is not just to think about Jesus as we embrace the other person but to embrace the other just like you would embrace Jesus, with respect, with care, with love, and with service and this may make us feel uncomfortable.
But welcoming involves bearing possible discomfort for the sake of another person’s knowledge of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and transferring His care, and His healing.
Now After all, that’s what Jesus did for us.
The biggest example is the cross, where Jesus is handed over to suffering and death, so that we might feel the welcoming embrace of God’s love.
There are times when Jesus stretches us beyond our comforts and calls us to welcome someone we would rather not welcome.
We might even find ourselves praying, “Oh Jesus, please not them!” But Jesus makes clear that when we open our homes, our hands, and our hearts to those who in need of Jesus’ life and love, whoever they might be, He is present, and His gracious and healing love is revealed in powerful ways.
Amen.
