Dead To Sin, Alive To God (Romans 6:1-6)

“What shall we say then?
Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.“ (Romans 6:1-6)

When we, the Christians, say we have died to sin does not mean our human nature has died. Rather, it means we are no longer held captive by it.
We are to be immovable towards sin as something would be.
Freedom from sin is what Christ accomplished on the cross.
He did confront all kinds of the evil spirits of sin, defeating them all and liberating us from its power.
When we are United together with Christ refers to being planted and growing together in Him, implying the expectation of fruit.
In the likeness of Jesus’ death, we, the Christians, get baptized declaring our real unity with His death, cause baptism causes real unity with His death.
We also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection referring both to the new life in this world and to eternal life in the age to come.
Knowing this that baptism is a reality, not merely an outward symbol.
When St. Paul says the old man”, he does not refer to human nature as such, but he refers to the power of sin in fallen man that once held sway over us.
Likewise, when he says “the body of sin”, he does not mean our human body but he means all iniquity.
Just as he calls the whole sum of wickedness “old man” again the wickedness which is made of the different parts of iniquity he calls “the body”.
Thus, it is sin itself that is crucified with Jesus, and not some kind of “sinful nature.”
For sin is what we do, not what we are.
So,  now we can understand all the terms that he uses and what it means.
St. Paul is declaring to all of us that if we have been united together in the likeness of Jesus’ death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
Amen.
