We Are Not Of This World (1Peter 2:9-10)

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.” (1Peter 2:9-10)

We, the Christians, are the children of God and are not of this world.
We live in a world of darkness, but we are not part of that darkness.
We are not of the world because we are in Christ.
We have the light dwelling in us.
Though we are still in the world, we are called to be set apart, to shine the light that others might know Him and be saved.
Jesus Himself said in the Gospel of John, chapter eighteen, "My kingdom is not of this world.
If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” (John18:36)
He also had prayed in chapter seventeen of the same Gospel, saying, "I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world" (John17:14).
So Jesus answered the question, why we are not of this world?
Because He, our Lord and Savior, is not.
When we are born again, that is to say have the new nature, we participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
St. Paul said in his second epistle to the Corinthians that we, the believers,  walk by faith, not by sight, but this world relies on what it can see.
We have treasures not of this world.
We seek a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys (Luke 12:33)
Our riches are not material but eternal.
We have weapons not of this world.
Our enemy is spiritual, as are our weapons and tactics of battle, as St. Paul said in His second epistle to the Corinthians, "For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds"(2Corinthians 10:4)
We have power not of this world, as the Psalmist said, "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God" (Psalm 20:7)
We have peace not of this world, as Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you" (John 14:27) Nothing can take that peace away.
Being not of this world, means we have a heavenly calling, purpose, and destination.
St. John said that this world and its priorities are fading away, but the one who does the will of God lives forever (1John 2:17)
Amen.
