We Must Put Boundaries On Our Thoughts (Philippians 4:8-9)
"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4:8-9)
We now are living in a highly divisive time.
Verbal attacks on social media and in real life are running rampant.
So we can easily be tempted to behave and react like the world around us.
The heart, mind, and soul are vulnerable entry points that must be protected.
They comprise our inner being and drive our beliefs, thoughts, and actions.
Out of our hearts, our mouths and actions speak.
But the word of God today is reminding us, we the Christians, to protect our minds and thoughts, and to behave according to our precious call. St. Paul is giving us a standard of acceptable behaviors that we are required to live the purposeful lives God intended for us.
He is instructing us to protect our minds and souls from imitating the world.
How?
By thinking and meditating on whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report.
We must follow Jesus, our Lord and Savior, as our example.
On the cross, He was mocked, beaten, and insulted, but He didn’t return lash for lash.
Instead, He pleaded with the Father on behalf of His crucifiers to forgive their ignorance.
While we may be tempted to insult back when insults come our way, but God’s word says to us not to have quick, hot-tempered reactions.
Instead, it instructs us to be slow to speak, quick to listen, and slow to anger.
If we do not proactively manage our thoughts, our minds will be affected with all the evil spirits around us and we will be vulnerable to be discouraged, depressed, overwhelmed, and anxiety to set up residence.
We, the children of God, are called to live a life of purity and holiness.
In Jesus, we can have this holy life and be able to overcome the world.
Amen.
