Faith Without Works Is Dead (James 2:14-22)
“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?
Can faith save him?
If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?
Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”
Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
You believe that there is one God.
You do well.
Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?
Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?“ (James 2:14-22)
Justification by faith is dynamic, not static.
For Christians, faith is living, dynamic, continuous and never merely point in a time.
This means that Christians do not exercise faith only at one crucial moment, expecting it to cover all the rest of their lives.
True faith is not a decision, but it is a way of life.
So we are justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law, but faith by itself, if it is not revealed in our deeds and behaviors, it is dead.
What is the difference between a believer in Jesus and non-believer.
The difference is seen in the believer himself.
We see him having all the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
We see him full of kind deeds towards others, very helpful and very generous in giving his time, his strength, and even his money to share with others.
All people around the believer can see that he is different and full of God’s grace.
But if we say we have faith in Christ and hate people, slander, envy, and kill, so our faith is void because it does not reveal the love of our Lord.
So we show our faith and unity in Christ by our good deeds that we have gained from our unity with Him.
It is not our works by our strength, but it is the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
We who believe, unite and abide in Christ are granted the entrance into God’s kingdom by His grace.
Through His mercy, we are justified by faith and empowered by God for good works or deeds of righteousness that bring glory to Him.
Amen.
