God’s Righteous Judgment (Romans 2:1-11)

“Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.
But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?
Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and long-suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
For there is no partiality with God.” (Romans 2:1-11)

We, as believing Christians, must not take the outcome of God’s final judgment for granted.
We must pray to the Lord to have mercy on us.
The verses we just read describes God’s judgment, showing how we can prepare ourselves for it.
St. Paul tells us that God’s righteous judgment will be according first to truth.
This means that nothing is hidden from Him.
He sees everything and knows the truth about each one of us.
It is a great self-deception to say, ”Who sees us?” and think there is no judgment.
Second, it is according to impenitent hearts.
An unrepentant heart despises God’s goodness, treasuring up wrath on the day of wrath.
A repentant heart, on the other hand, is grateful to God’s patience and abides in Christ, practicing repentance all his life, which produces confidence before God in the day of judgment.
Third, God’s judgment is according to our deeds.
Doing good does not mean to gain merit with God, but rather, it is the unity of intentions with actions, and faith with works.
The goal of good deeds is to seek God’s glory and honor, not ours.
We have to know that doing good deeds with good intentions alone, or faith without works, will not save.
Forth Jesus on the day of judgment will render to each one according to his deeds.
We are the ones who determine our destiny, either to be in Christ and obey His words or reject His goodness and submit ourselves to whom we have chosen, the devil.
Those with true faith who are the doers of the truth, practice virtue from pure and repentant hearts.
Christ will judge us on the basis of the light He Himself has given to each one of us and our response to His light with our own free will.
Amen.
