Mosiac Law And The Natural Law (Romans2:12-16)

“For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.” (Romans2:12-16)

St. Paul in his epistle to the Romans distinguishes between his several ways he uses the word “LAW”.
First, the Mosiac Law which was written by God on tablets of stone and given to the Jews through Moses.
This law reveals God’s righteousness to prepare men for the coming of the Messiah and for God’s grace.
When St. Paul speaks of “the law” he is most often referring to the Mosiac Law.
This law is good, but cannot save and cannot be kept.
Why?
Because it’s purpose is only to reveal good from evil.
It manifests sin and makes the world accountable to God.
It’s main purpose is to lead us to Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, whom God has sent to the world to save us from the grip of sin and death.
Though the law is not opposed to the grace of God, it cannot save us or make us righteous.
The second kind of law is “The Natural Law” which has been written by God in the heart of every human who has ever lived as the voice of conscience.
It is a reliable guide to God’s righteousness for those who have pure heart, but it can be dulled or obscured completely by sin.
The third kind of law is “the law of works” which is our attempt to establish righteousness before God on the basis of keeping the natural law and the Mosiac Law.
But this Law reveals human weakness and sin.
Then we have “The Law of The Spirit” which is “The Law of Christ”.
It is the power and life of the Holy Spirit active in those who by faith in Christ live out their baptism to the fullest.
This makes the righteousness of Christ gained by faith real in one’s life.
It defeats sin.
It makes us able to reject sin and be sanctified and holy as our Lord is holy.
It empowers and restores the power of the Spirit over the flesh, the soul, and the body.
Amen.
