We Must Learn To Be Content In All Circumstances (Philippians 4:11-13)
“I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound.
Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:11-13)
Many of us lean on God more in times of need than in times of abundance.
We strife to seek Him when we are having problems or troubles in our lives, and we are keen to sit and pray to Him, but then as soon as times become a little smoother, our seeking slows down or sometimes even stops.
Jesus is our savior and He is the only one we need to go to and pray to Him to solve our problems or provide for our needs.
But this attitude indicates that our relationship with Him is not a relation of love.
It shows that our love to Him is conditional.
But Jesus’ love to us is unconditional.
He loves us fully and completely, all the time, no matter what.
He loves us when we mess up, and He loves us when we do something right.
Our love and relationship with God should not be conditional, either.
It grieves His heart when He blesses us abundantly, and those are the times we choose to allow complacency and comfort to take over in our quiet time with Him that we have to have with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He wants our hearts all the time, no matter what.
St. Paul implores us to lean into Jesus in plenty and want and to be content in whatever state we are.
He advises us to learn the secret of being content in any situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want.
So the question is, how we can do this?
We can do all this through Him who gives us strength.
We must pray and spend time with Jesus everyday, no matter what.
When we have problems we pray about the hard things we are facing asking His strength to overcome it.
And when life seems calm, we thank Him and praise His name for all He has done and for all of the blessings in our lives.
We, the children of God, must seek God daily with our full hearts, no matter what is swirling around us.
God loves to give His children good gifts and lavish on them.
Amen.
