Pray According To God’s Will (1John 5:14-15)

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” (1John 5:14-15)

Most of us do not know how to pray.
We think that prayer is like a wish list that we tell God what we want and expect Him to answer our prayers and deliver.
But St. John is telling us that effective prayer aligns our hearts with God’s will, not just our desires.
Praying in alignment with God’s will is the key to seeing results.
And how do we know His will?
Three things we have to do to know God’s will.
First, by spending time sitting in front of God in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide us what to pray for.
St. Paul told us in the epistle to the Roman,”Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.
For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”(Romans 8:26-27)
Second, we must read God’s Word.
The more we know God's Word, the more we understand His heart and His desires for us.
Through this relationship, our prayers start aligning with His plans.
We pray the Lord’s prayer and we say,”Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
We ask for God’s will to be done cause we trust that He has a perfect plan for our lives and He knows best.
Third, If we want our prayers to be effective, we need to come to God with a pure heart.
To clean our hearts means we repent and cleanse ourselves by sprinkling the blood of Jesus on us.
Sin can be a barrier between us and God, and that is why we must confess our sins which hinders our prayers.
We must be willing to come before God, admit our sins, and ask for forgiveness.
We must desire a clean heart for God to hear our prayers.
St. John assures us in his first epistle, to confess our sins and Jesus is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.(1John 1:9)
When we come before Jesus, asking Him to search our hearts and cleanse us, we can hear God’s voice clearly, and our prayers regain its power.
Amen.
