Bringing Every Thought Captive To The Obedience Of Christ (2Corinthians 10:3-6)
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.” (2Corinthians 10:3-6)
God did not intend for us to defeat Satan on our own.
He has equipped us with tools to use against Satan's attacks.
We cannot fight evil spiritual battles alone or with weapons of this world.
Our primary defense is the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
He is the only One who defeated the devil for our sake on the cross and gave all who believe in His name His authority over all the evil spirits.
We rebuke the devil in Jesus name and he flees.
We, the believers, go into a battle with the devil and we know that we will win it because of the name of Jesus.
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.
On the contrary, we have divine power to demolish strongholds.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.
How?
When we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
We arm ourselves against evil spiritual forces by obeying the word of God and all the commandments of Jesus.
St. Paul told us in his epistle to the Ephesians, chapter six, to take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.
As we take every thought captive, we match it against what the Gospel says.
As we memorize Jesus’ words and put them in our minds and hearts, we gain wisdom to discern what thoughts are true, and which are attacks from our enemy, the devil.
As we abide in Jesus and obey His words, we will be able to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
Jesus promises to be our helper, to be with us, and never forsake us.
So we need to obey the word of God and be alert and sober, stand firm in the faith, and resist the devil.
We must be on guard and ready all the time and resist any thought that separates us from our Lord and savior.
St. Peter also tells us that the end of all things is near, therefore we must be alert and of sober mind so that we may pray. (1Peter 4:7)
He reminds us to be alert, self-controlled, and pray frequently.
Jesus said in the Gospel of Mathew, chapter twenty-six, "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."(Mathew 26:41)
Prayer is a way to ask for Jesus’ help, protection and guidance in the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
