God Calls Us To Store Up Treasures In Heaven (Mathew 6: 19-21)
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Mathew 6:19-21.)
After reading these verses, each one of us must ask himself or herself this important question, am I investing in the kingdom of heaven or in this world?
This question challenges us to consider where we are investing our resources like time, money, and energy.
Are we focused on accumulating wealth, possessions, and status in this world, or are we investing in the things of God?
Jesus, who is our Lord and savior, is drawing our attention that there are two ways we can invest our resources in, either mortal or immortal things.
He is teaching us today that we should not lay up for ourselves treasures in this earth.
He did not leave us wondering why we should not do this, but he continued to explain to us that in this earth everything can be destroyed and stolen easily.
This world is perishable and finite.
It is unstable and mutable.
This earthly kingdom is under the power and control of the devil who from the beginning came to steel, destroy and murder us.
He is the prince of this world.
So we should be aware to where we should invest our resources.
Jesus advices us to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
We should be heaven-focused which means prioritizing eternal treasures over earthly ones.
It means living with an awareness that the things of this world are temporary and that we can find lasting value in God’s kingdom work.
When we store up treasures in heaven, we invest in things that have eternal significance.
But the question now is, how we can do this practically?
By uniting ourselves with Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our mediator to our heavenly Father.
When we abide in Him and He is in us, we will receive His eternal life and light.
We will be able to live in this world and use it, but it does not rule over us.
And as Jesus said for where our treasure is, there our heart will be also.
To be heavenly-focused means that Jesus is the One who rules over our lives.
He said if you love me, obey my advices and commands.
So if we love Him and love each other as He loved us and do the work He has given us, we will be able to lay up treasures in heaven.
This perspective frees us from the stress of pursuing material wealth and success.
It also allows us to live generously, making all the contributions that God wants us to make during our earthly lifetimes.
Amen.
