We Are Forgiven Because Of Jesus’ Precious Blood (Psalm 130: 1-6)

“Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD; Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive. To the voice of my supplications. If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope. My soul waits for the Lord” (Psalm130:1-6.)

The incarnated Son of God, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior came to our world to reveal to us the true image of Father God and to show us His love and forgiveness of our sins.
It is a new covenant between God and man His creation.
He does not forgive our sins in the sense of not remembering it or ignoring it as in the old covenant, but He came to give us His power to overcome sin and have the ability to resist it in His name.
He confronted our enemy, the devil, and all his evil spirits, and overcame them for us on the cross.
His precious blood that He had shed on the cross cleanse us from all our sins.
It is because of His precious blood that we are forgiven.
Now we have the authority in His name to rebuke the devil and stop his sinful spirits to enter us.
So Jesus came to abolish the root cause of sin and gave us the ability in the Holy Spirit to resist his temptations.
Now the meaning of forgiveness in the New Testament is different completely from that in the Old Testament, and became fundamental to our faith as Christians.
It is one of the prime characteristics of God’s nature.
Yet, still Christians don’t believe they have ever felt forgiven because they may have a false image of Father God.
They still think of Him as the image which was portrayed of Him to the people in the Old Testament.
He is an angry God who is out to catch us in our wrongs.
Heaven contains a large filing cabinet containing our spiritual rap-sheet; if we step too far out of line, then the Lord will dole out some form of divine retribution.
A lot of Christians, even those who go to church and read the New Testament, still see God as a harsh leader who gives commands to obey and if not obeyed they will be burned in fire.
We may not even know we think that, until something unplanned or unwanted happens in our life, and our first thought is “is God punishing me?”
Somewhere, there is a belief that mistakes and sins completely invalidate God’s love and grace.
The second obstacle to feeling forgiven is ourselves.
Sometimes, we think that we aren’t worthy of that forgiveness.
We make the record of our sins, and because that record is longer than we would like, we actively remove ourselves from the offer of forgiveness.
The Psalmist in the Old is depicting God keeping records of our sins and asking His mercy.
God out of His mercy heard the old people’s prayers and sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to reveal God’s love and mercy.
There is no rap sheet that we need to try to work our way out of.
We do not live our lives under the peering eye of an angry cosmic enforcer.
Jesus came to give all who believes in Him, and receives His Holy Spirit,  His power over sin and death and to defeat the evil one’s temptations.
Jesus gave us commands as advices to how to resist the devil who came to steal, destroy and kill us.
If we get weak and unintentionally come under the devil’s influence and sin, we have Jesus’ blood to cover us and make us righteous in Him.
In Jesus, Father God reaches out to us in love and grace.
He did set us free from the grip of sin.
This spiritual freedom isn’t because of anything we do, we don’t earn it or merit it, or work our way into forgiveness.
We are forgiven and righteous in His Holy name and precious blood.
The greatest example of God’s radical and transforming forgiveness is Jesus on the cross.
Jesus hung in front of the people who spit on Him, and mocked Him.
It would have been easy for Jesus to utter a word of condemnation or vengeance.
But instead, in the face of all the world’s cruelty, as the world’s sin crushed Him, Jesus voiced nothing but loving forgiveness, saying “Father forgive them.”
In Jesus name, the fullness of forgiveness is always on display.
Amen.
