If We Love Jesus, We Cannot Help But Be Obedient To Him (John 14: 15-17)

If We Love Jesus, We Cannot Help But Be Obedient To Him.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. “(*John 14:15-17.)

In this evil, corrupted, and twisted world that we live in now, the word obedience has become distorted.
Obedience has come to mean subservience and the erasure of personality.
That is why most people fear the thought of obedience and do not want to hear about it,  especially to God, the almighty, all-knowing, and all-powerful Creator of the universe.
They struggle to choose Him over themselves.
They could not seem to be able to love Him and see His affections over those of the world.
And there became a barrier between them and God their Creator, Lord and Savior and just could not be obedient to Him.
The devil our enemy, the prince of this corrupted world, has also distorted the meaning of the word “commandment” of God.
He has portrayed  God’s commandments are unjust orders that cannot be carried out.
That is why Father God, who is full of mercy and love for His creation, has sent His Son incarnate, Jesus Christ, into our world to reveal His love and mercy to us and to remove this distorted image of Him that the devil has imprinted in our minds about Him.
Jesus’ commandments to us are not rules we have to follow but advices for us in order to remain in unity with Him because He is our only source of eternal life, joy, and peace.
Christ loves us and wants us to enjoy the incredible fruits of His perfect will.
Love and obedience are two faces for the same coin.
If we love someone we automatically trust him and follow him.
Not only that but we do all what he wants to please him.
Jesus said in these verses that we just read,  that who ever loves Him must obey His commands.
Why?
Because our obedience to His advices will let us be one with Him, He in us and we are in Him.
This unity will put us in a place that our obedience would be a natural overflow of His love to us and our love for Him.
If we truly have love in our hearts to Jesus, we can not help but be obedient to Him.
He longs for us to live a lifestyle of love-based obedience.
The love of God is so powerful, it transforms us to His image and likeness.
It will also mold us to be people not of this world but of the kingdom of heaven.
We will naturally be people who are obedient to God’s perfect will for us.
St. Paul said in his epistle to the Romans, chapter six, “But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
” Because Jesus confronted the devil on the cross and defeated him for us, we have now this victory and we are transformed into people who have gained freedom from the law of sin and death.
We are now enslaved to a lifestyle of right living whereby we obey out of devotion to Him.
Amen.
