Giving Is A Privilege (Mark 12:41-44)
“Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.” (Mark 12:41-44)
Many of us have faced financial hardship at a time of our lives, and our income was less than our expenses and needs.
But many also of us who asked Jesus with faith can tell stories of miraculous ways God intervened and provided for their needs.
Each one of us has experienced Jesus’ mercy and His quick answer to our prayers in the time of financial distress.
This story we just read gives us a great example of God’s oversight of our lives, even when we might feel unseen.
Jesus pointed out a poor widow who, even in the midst of her poverty, chose to give the only penny she has for God’s glory.
He observed her way of putting all what she has with joy and thankfulness, while the other people putting a lot of money in the temple’s offering box with the intension to be seen and noticed and for their own glory.
They give waiting for people to thank them.
Sometimes when we contribute a gift from our abundance we do it with the sense of pride.
But this poor widow that Jesus was pointing out did not enjoy an abundance of earthly wealth, yet Jesus declared that she had put more into the treasury than the others who gave.
They gave out of their abundance, but she gave out of her poverty.
The coins she placed in the treasury box were all the money she had in this world. It was everything she had left to live on, yet she purposed in her heart to give it to the Lord.
She was certain that He would meet her needs, and she demonstrated the depth of her faith when she dropped those coins into the treasury.
In this passage Jesus gave us a lesson to how we should give our offerings.
We must know that when we give we are thanking our Lord and God for blessing us.
He is the one who blessed us with this money and we are grateful for his blessings and willing to share these blessings with others for His glory and not our glory.
In the Gospel of Mathew, chapter six, Jesus said that when we give to the needy, do not let our left hand know what our right hand is doing, so that our giving may be in secret.
And our Father who sees in secret will reward us.” (Mathew 6:3)
When we give in secret for God’s glory, not our own, we will be divinely rewarded in ways that resound into eternity.
When we give our offerings we also must be confident and have faith that God is faithful and will provide all our needs in His perfect timing.
Giving is a privilege from God to us to bless His name and glorify Him, and He also blesses us with His richness on earth and in heaven.
Amen.
