If You Hear God’s Voice, Do Not Harden Your Hearts (Hebrews 3:12-15)

“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, while it is said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” (Hebrews 3:12-15.)

We look at certain sins that we fall into and think it’s the worst thing that can happen, but it isn’t the worst thing.
The worst thing of all is to have a hardened heart.
When we sin we can go quickly to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, repent and sprinkle His precious blood over our sin, and He will cleanse us and forgive us.
The worst thing is that we never feel that we are doing anything wrong and we do not need a savior and our hearts get harder and harder each day.
It’s better to be a prodigal and eventually return someday than to never come home.
And a hardened heart can cause someone to commit the unforgivable sin, which is blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
Jesus’ love to each one of us is manifested every day.
He does miracles with every person, either a believer or unbeliever, and gives all the opportunity to believe.
But still there are some people who reject Him.. If we choose to believe and trust in Him, then He will bestow His love and life on us.
He will protect us and give us His overcoming power over the devil and his temptations.
On the other hand, if we choose to reject Him and blaspheme Him, then He will depart and turn away His face from us respecting our decision.
This certainly does not happen overnight.
But Jesus is very merciful and patient with us.
He tries many times to knock our doors waiting with love and compassion to open for Him.
His voice is calling us every minute.
Blaspheming the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean saying something irreverent about the Spirit of God.
Rather, blaspheming the Holy Spirit is a deliberate, willful, continual rejection of God’s voice.
And by continued exposure to the truth of God and a refusal to obey and trust in Him, we finally go too far and lose all perspective.
The work of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of our sin, cleanse us, and bring us to Jesus Christ.
So, to blaspheme and insult the Holy Spirit is to reject the work that He is attempting to do.
And when we blaspheme the Holy Spirit, there is no hope for us.
St. Paul is warning us saying, today if we hear the voice of the Holy Spirit calling us, we must respond quickly and not wait or postpone till tomorrow, lest any of us be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
He also said in his second epistle to the Corinthians, chapter six,”Today is the day of salvation”.
He is warning us that a continual refusal and rejection to Jesus’ love and life will make it very hard to return back because the heart will be completely hardened and become petrified and will not be able to feel or hear the voice of life, and this will lead to our death spiritually and psychologically.
May God soften our hearts and make us His true children who are full of His life and love.
Amen.
