We Are Called To Be Partakers Of The Divine Nature (2 Peter 1:2-4)
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Peter 1:2-4)
We read in the book of Genesis, chapter one,”Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness,….
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
So, we know that from the beginning God created man in His image and likeness, in other words, humanity by nature is an icon or image of deity.
The divine image is in all humanity.
Through sin, however, this image was marred and we fell.
So what does St. Peter mean by us being partakers of the divine nature?
To pursue godliness does not mean that we become divine or having God’s nature, but to be more like His nature.
When the Son of God, Jesus Christ assumed our humanity in the womb of Virgin Mary, that is to say, being incarnated, the process of our being renewed in God’s image and likeness was begun.
Because of the incarnation of the Son of God, the fullness of God inhabited the human flesh.
God’s deity interpenetrated our humanity.
When we accept Jesus and get united with Him, means it is again possible for us to experience to be in God’s image.
Through the union with Christ, we become by grace the children of God.
When we accept Christ by faith and be united with Him we begin a process of recreation, being renewed in God’s image and likeness.
We become partakers of the divine nature.
What does that practically mean?
It means by application that the divine energies interpenetrate the human nature.
So we partake in God’s energies not in His essence.
We partake of the grace of God, His strength, His righteousness, His love, and are enabled to serve Him and glorify Him.
Amen.
