The Difference Between Regret and Repentance (Mathew 27:1-5)

“When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people
plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.
And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him
to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned,
was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests
and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.”
And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”
Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed,
and went and hanged himself.”
(Mathew 27:1-5.)

We read in these verses that Judas Iscariot one of the twelve disciples,
after betraying Jesus, he was remorseful
i.e., regretful, and gave back the thirsty pieces of silver,
which he received in return for fulfilling the evil plan against Jesus.
Remorse is an evil spirit that is very deceiving.
There is a great difference between the spirit of remorse
which is due to the accusation of the devil,
and the conviction of the Holy Spirit which leads to repentance.
When the Holy Spirit points at my sin, He gives me at the same time
the way that leads to repentance and my salvation from this sinful spirit.
But the devil when he points at my sin, he accuses me and let me regret
and feel that I fell in a dark pit that is no way to get out of it.
So remorse does not lead to repentance.

We think that if an evil person regrets what he did means he feels sorry
and wants to repent.
On the contrary, remorse always be the fruit of the sense of guilt.
The devil after filling someone with hatred against his friend,
this hatred leads him to kill his friend.
After the person fulfills the devil’s plan, the devil accuses him,
telling him you are a killer.
Then this person feels the sense of guilt which leads him to be remorseful.
To end this very depressing feeling that this person feels he wants to die
and get rid of this unbearable feeling.

The Gospel says that Judas was remorseful for what he did to Jesus.
The proof that Judas was filled with this evil spirit of remorse and sense of guilt,
is that it led him to hang himself and die and not led him to repent
and change his situation.
On the other hand, we see that Peter, one of the twelve disciples too,
did deny Jesus, but He repented and He became one of the pillars of the church
that Jesus Himself said to him
“That you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church,
and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
(Mathew 16:18.)

May we all ask our Lord, Jesus Christ,  to fill us with the spirit of discernment
to discern the evil spirits and rebuke them in Jesus name.
May we all be always humble and repent our sins.
Amen.
