Seek God’s Joy In His Presence (Psalm 16:6-11)
“I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.
I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope.
For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
(Psalm 16:6-11.)
We are used to feel happy and filled with joy when something good happens in our lives.
But we find this joy temporary.
As soon as the happy event ends, we return back again to the state of anxiety, depression,
and sadness.
We used to derive our joy from circumstances, events, or even people around us.
In this stressful world it is so difficult to find joy that does not last.
But the true joy that never lasts and no one can take away from us comes from being
in the presence of God all the time.
He is the Spirit of Joy.
We always confuse the temporary happiness we find from worldly pleasure with the lasting joy
that comes from the presence of the Holy Spirit in us.
The lasting and eternal joy comes from the eternal God.
If He is in us we have all the fruits of His Spirit in us and we will find joy always available to us.
No matter what circumstances we are facing, we find the joy of the Holy Spirit in us
calming us and reassuring us that He is with us and will change the bad circumstance
for our goodness.
So what we should do when the devil our enemy comes to steal our joy
by sending his fearful thoughts or trials?.
We quickly go to our loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and pray,
pouring out our fearful thoughts and feelings.
St. Paul in his epistle to the Philippians, chapter four, assures us that we can pray about everything, and Jesus will respond by sending His true peace and joy.
Let us read it together, in verses six and seven, saying,
”Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving,
let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
(Pilippians4:6-7.)
When we talk with God in prayer and share with Him anything with confidence,
we will feel His peaceful presence in us and feels His deep love and care for us.
We also must read His word in the Gospel for the word of God is alive and active,
sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing our soul and spirit.
The word of God will raise the voice of truth within us and makes us discern
all the lies of the devil, his thoughts and trials, and reject them in the name of Jesus,
and be able to enter into God’s peaceful and joyful presence.
Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate God’s word and speak to us personally.
We must approach God’s word with humbleness and be ready to receive
whatever the Holy Spirit wants to guide us with and reveal to us.
While reading the Gospel we look for principles to guide our decisions, and promises
which encourage us in difficult times and fill us with confidence in God’s love
and faithfulness to inspire and strengthen our faith.
May we all abide in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who is the only source
of eternal love, peace, and joy.
Amen.
