The Difference Between The Two Covenants (1Peter1:16-19)

“For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes when he received honor
and glory from God the Father.
The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him,
“This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.
”We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.
Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence
in the message proclaimed by the prophets.
You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words
are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns,
and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.”
(1Peter1:16-19.)

St. Peter declares to us in theses verses that the prophets of the Old Testament
were guided by the Holy Spirit to prophesy about the coming of the Savior
who will save the world from the evil of Satan, the enemy of all creation.
These prophecies were for our teachings and preparation to receive Him.
St. Peter continues to compare between the two covenants,
in order to make us realize the great difference between the Old and the New.
He said that the enlightenment given to the people by the writings of the old prophets
is like a light of a lamp shining in a dark room compared to the bright light of the Morning Sun,
who is the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who came to enlighten the whole world.
So the knowledge of the old prophets about God the Father is a dim light
compared to the true light shinning and revealing to us in His Son Jesus Christ.

God sent His only begotten Son, incarnated, to reveal Himself to the whole world.
Jesus came to reveal God’s love and life.
He said that God Father is love, life- giver and light who has no darkness or evil in Him.
God does not tempt anyone with evil.
God the lover can not be in the same time the tempter and the killer.
The tempter who is the devil is the man’s enemy who came to kill, steel and destroy.
He is the one who tempts us with evil.
So there is a difference in the level of enlightenment between the two covenants.

We, the Christians, establish our faith in the person of Christ and the unity with Him.
We read the Old Testament with new insights and new perspectives of the new revelation
and not the opposite as some people do.
They establish the understanding of the New Testament based on the Old,
considering that the Old came first.
This is a mistake because the Old was a message and prophecy for the New Hope
coming to reveal God’s love to mankind and His salvation plan
which will restore man to his original image and likeness.

We read in the first epistle to Timothy, chapter three,
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles,
believed on in the world, received up in glory.”
(1Timothy3:16.)
Amen.
