God’s Purpose Of Marriage (Mathew 19:3-7)

“The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him,
“Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”
And He answered and said to them,
“Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’
and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh’?
So then, they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give
a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”
He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts,
permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
(Mathew 19:3-7.)

Marriage in Christianity is a sacred relationship between a man and a woman.
In theses verses, Jesus laid down the rules of marriage, saying,
”a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh’?
So then, they are no longer two but one flesh.
” The two shall become one, means, that they are united in full union in spirit, soul, and body.
The two pledged before God to give themselves to one another fully in love.
This love is like Christ’s love for His church, that is, the sacrificial love of giving.
The Gospel likens the love of Christ for His church to the love of the bridegroom for His bride.

St. Paul advices husbands to love their wives as Christ loved His church, saying,
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
that He might sanctify and cleanse her.”
(Ephesians 5:25-26.)
In the same epistle he continues to explain how men ought to love their wives, saying,
”So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies;
he who loves his wife loves himself.
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it,
just as the Lord does the church.
For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.”

So the foundation of any Christian marriage is love.
From the moment a man and a woman decide to get married,
they have the obligation to build their marriage lovingly and consistently.
Married couples must gather together and pray and intercede for each other
and their unity in Christ.
Marriages that are strengthened by the Holy Spirit are like homes built on the rock,
they are reinforced to weather storms.
Even when the winds of change come, the home stands firm.
With the daily demands of life, it can be really difficult to prioritize our marriages.

Married couples must know that their covenant with each other is a covenant before God as well. This covenant is a covenant of love.
When they love each other as their own bodies, this love will be transferred to their children too. This sacred love is the reason that the two become one flesh.
So all spouses must obey the command of the Gospel,
that is, each man must love his own wife as himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
And this will bring blessings to the family and specially to the children,
and the Holy Spirit will dwell in their home.
Amen.
