There Is Victory Over Sin In Jesus Christ (Romans 7:15-20)
“For what I am doing, I do not understand.
For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.
But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells;
for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.”
(Romans 7:15-20.)
Since Adam sinned we all are born with the tendency to sin.
When we sin we bring it to dwell in us.
Death is the wage of sin, that is to say, the consequence of sin.
This was not God’s original design to us.
We were created for life, not death.
That is why St. Paul in the same epistle, chapter twelve, warns us
to be different than the world.
Jesus, the Son of God, Who is Perfect and Holy, came to overcome the power of sin
that bonds us and defeated sin and death on the cross.
Our fallenness points us to our need to Jesus who is the Only One
who could save us from sin and death.
We have to go to Him, receive Him in the Holy Spirit and abide in Him.
Our unity with Him is the only way for our salvation.
Everyday reminds us of His new mercies.
Yes, we still struggle, but we have our Hope in Him who defeated the devil
and his temptation of sin which leads to our death.
Through Jesus’ victory over sin we would be equipped to fight him.
So our awareness of our fallenness should not drag us down,
but make us rejoice.
Why?
Because we can overcome sin in the Holy Spirit.
We just go and confess our sins to Jesus, repent, and unite with Him
to have His victory over our struggles.
In Him we have the victory, the comfort, and joy that we seek.
Christ has created us in His likeness.
When we humble ourselves and surrender to Him,
we have the hope to be like Him and overcome sin and death.
Amen.
