Avoid Sexual Temptation (Proverb 5:1-5)
“My son, pay attention to my wisdom; Lend your ear to my understanding, that you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge.
For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of hell.
Lest you ponder her path of life. Her ways are unstable; You do not know them.”
(Proverb 5:1-5.)
These verses we read warn us of the danger associated with sexual temptation.
We must know that the spirits of seduction fill all the environment that surrounds us.
It could be in the people around us or on the internet which is an open door for all forms of seduction.
Sitting most of the day on our phones gazing on the internet is a trap that Satan uses to penetrate our minds and thoughts and leads us to sexual immorality.
He made it so easy without going anywhere, while sitting home he can enter our private rooms and show us pictures, movies, or even advertisements that are full of seduction to attract us and then let us do acts of debauchery.
Everything we have seen with our
eyes will then turn into bad habits that enslave our bodies and minds, rob us of our wills, and fill our being with the full presence of Satan.
He will become our master who orders us to do his works and whatever he wants, without our permission and awareness.
Satan is a cruel and merciless master and he does not know how to be resented, but he is a tyrant and an occupier.
And this is the problem, that this occupier does not leave his prey easily.
That is why the verses of today warn us that if we obey and submit ourselves to all these temptations we will inevitably die.
Satan is the god of death. St. James also confirming that the consequence of sin is death, saying,
“when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”
(James 1:15.)
But the good news is that Jesus, our Lord and Savior, is the only One who can overcome the devil’s spirits of sin and death.
He came to save us and release us of his bondage and slavery.
He is the Spirit of life who overcame sin and death on the cross.
He rose from the dead and raised up with Him all those who accepted and received Him. St. Peter in his second epistle reassures us, saying,
“The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority.”
(2Peter2:9-10.)
St. Paul gives us the advice of what to do to be away from the devil and his temptations, saying,
“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.“
(Colossians 3:1-5).
So we have to close any door that would bring seduction, either to cut a relationship with someone or not to watch anything that may affect you.
We all have to live as children of God, seeking those things which are above, where Christ is, and setting our minds not on things on the earth.
St. Paul in his epistle to the Colossians, chapter three, said,
“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
(Colossians 3:1-2.)
Amen.
