What Is Hope in Christianity? (1Peter 1: 3-5)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

(1Peter 1:3-5.)

Before we know the meaning of hope in Christianity, we must differentiate between faith and wishful desires.
Wishing thought is a desire that we have with no power to achieve.
But faith is based on Christ’s promise to answer and fulfill our desires.
It is based on Jesus’ love, authority, and power for fulfillment.
As for hope, it is the next step to faith.
Because I trusted in the power and authority of Christ to fulfill my desire, which is according to His will, I expect and wait for it to be fulfilled with hope.
For non-Christians, hope is like a wish that seems unattainable and a wish for something they cannot do or have but desire to happen anyway.
As Christians, we actively hope in Someone whose promises we believe and cherish.

St. Paul was praying for the Ephesians that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give them the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of their hearts enlightened, that they may know what is the hope to which He has called them and what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints.
That is why when we face trials, and we toil and strive, we do not get scared or depressed because we have our hope set on the living God, who is our Savior.
Our hope is found in His gracious promises.
He said that in the world we will have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. He has spoken to us, that we may have peace in Him.
He said that heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will by no means pass away.
St. Paul in the Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter ten, verse twenty-three, said, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”
In his first epistle, chapter one, St. Peter said that we, the believers in God, have faith and hope in Him.
And he advises us, we the children of God, in the same epistle, that we set our hope entirely on the grace that will be brought to us at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Our hope is not in temporal earthly things, but we are waiting for our blessed hope, which is the appearance of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
So that being justified by His grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. That is sure hope.
Let us all, with St. Peter, give thanks to our Father God, who, according to His abundant mercy, has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for us, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Amen.
