A Servant Of The Lord Must Not Quarrel (2Timothy 2: 23-26)

“But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.
And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.”
(2Timothy 2:23-26.)

God’s children are called to live in peace with all people.
Jesus commanded us in the Gospel of Mark, chapter nine, verse fifty saying,”Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another.”
St. Paul in the epistle to the Romans advised us that if it is possible, to live peaceably with all men and not avenge ourselves.
We all know that conflict is a part of life in this earth.
It exits at work, at home, or even in church and ministry.
However, we must not give ourselves over to it.
We could be led to ugly conversations that would generate strife inside the body of Christ.
St. James in his epistle, chapter four, gave us the clue why we fight and create conflict saying,
”Where do wars and fights come from among you?
Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?
You lust and do not have.
You murder and covet and cannot obtain.
You fight and war.”

So conflict happens when we focus on ourselves and our pride.
We get into useless conversations and discussions that lead us to quarrel and fight with each other and we lose our good relationships and peace in the place.
When we permit the ugly thoughts of who among us is greater, and who among us his words are heard more and can control everything in our own ways, they generate strife.
We know that foolish conversations and debates will always lead to strife.
So before we get into any conflict with anyone, we have to ask ourselves a very important question, does this conversation glorify the name of God, and are the words we speak from the Holy Spirit, or are they from the spirit of anger and pride?
St. James told us the source of conflicts in our life is our own selfishness.
We have to examine ourselves every time we get into foolish talks.
What we all need is to pray for wisdom to know when a conversation is mere foolishness and when engaging in debate will be fruitful and effective.
We discerningly, must leave the unfruitful conflicts behind, avoid quarrels and debates, and keep our thoughts to ourselves if we know they would not effectively help anyone in solving the problem or change anything except bringing tension between us.
Do not contribute in an argument that let you slip in a pit full of hurt and anger.
We must focus on how to glorify our Lord every time we speak.
We, as children of God, must ask ourselves every time we decide to open a conversation with anyone, does this conversation have a value and is profitable?
Does it reveal the goodness of God, His love, and His enlightened ideas that benefit the business or the ministry?
If no, we stop talking and do not engage in stuff that is less than our calling.
Strife brings hurt and pain which we can avoid easily by asking in prayer for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and discernment to when we talk and debate and when we stop arguing.
In the Book of Proverb, chapter twenty-two, God warns us not to have relationship with people who spread and thrives on strife, saying,”Make no friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man do not go, lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul.”
When we obey God’s words and not contribute to that kind of behavior, our lives will change for the better,  have no conflict, and be full of God’s peace.
Amen.
