Be Holy, For Jesus Our Lord Is Holy (1 Peter 1: 13-16)
“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”(1 Peter 1:13-16.)
Our sanctification process is the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
The day when we accepted and received Jesus Christ, and opened our hearts to the dwelling of the Holy Spirit, He began the process of our transformation from our old sinful nature to the new holy nature.
St. Peter here in these verses draws our attention that we have a fundamental and important role in the success of this transformation process.
He gives us the steps we must take to be sanctified.
First, we must gird up the loin of our minds, be sober, and alert to any tempting or lustful thoughts that can enter our minds.
We must exclude and resist every worldly thought thrown in our minds that is not from the Holy Spirit.
While doing this we rest our hope fully upon the grace, that is to say, not depend on our own strength and works but upon Jesus Christ, the grace been given to us by our Father God.
Secondly, we must feed daily on the Lord’s word and obey His commandments, for they are the safety valve for us and they are our only source of eternal peace and joy.
We "must trust Jesus’ words, as He said in the Gospel of Mathew, chapter twenty-four, verse thirty-five, Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Thirdly, we do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. We have to put off, concerning our former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of our mind.
We put on the new nature which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. We present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God.
When the Holy Spirit sanctifies us, we should know how to possess our own vessels in sanctification and honor, for God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.
We have to look carefully lest anyone of us fall short of the grace of God.
We must put before our eyes one goal, which is to be holy, because without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Amen.
