God Disciplines His True Children (Hebrews 12:6-11)

“‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.’ Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not discipline and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:6-11.)

The Lord’s discipline is not like our earthly fathers’ discipline. God’s aim is not to blame us for our wrong doings and punishes us but to correct us and instruct us to the right path. This kind of discipline fosters our spiritual growth and our spiritual maturity as children of God. It is not punitive, rather, it is an expression of our Lord’s love for us and His desire to save us from the evil one, the devil, whose plan is to destroy and kill us.

It is His mean to develop in us a holy character as He is holy. By chastening us He guides us to live a righteous life. One of the main signs that we are the true children of God is that we accept the Lord’s discipline and consider it a privilege to be corrected in the perfect time to not lose our salvation. It is a marvelous opportunity to know what our faults are, while walking in our spiritual journey to correct them before it is too late. To know what is the obstacle that let the Holy Spirit not succeeding in His process of our sanctification. To fix our wrong path before the devil, our accuser, accuses us before God and be a great obstacle to be saved.

How God discipline us? He sends His faithful and spiritual fathers and ministers who are filled with the Holy Spirit and living a righteous life, to rebuke us and admonish us for sinful works or actions we are doing. As children of God we want the Holy Spirit succeed to transform us to be in Jesus’ image and likeness.

Saint Paul is telling us not to be angry when we got disciplined, or make light of the Lord’s discipline. We should not lose heart when the Lord rebukes us, because we know that the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastens everyone He accepts as His son. Amen.
