By Our Fruits the World Will Know Us (Matthew 7:16-20)

“You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.”(Mathew 7:16-20)

When we believe in Jesus, obey His commands, and submit everything to Him completely, we receive Him in us in the Holy Spirit. Receiving Jesus in us is a gift and abiding in Him is the only way to produce the fruit of the Spirit. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in us, the Spirit is life and we will definitely bear fruits of righteousness.

In the Gospel of Mathew, chapter three, Saint John the baptist said to the people who were coming to his baptism, to bear fruits worthy of repentance. And in the passage we just read Jesus said, that a good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Therefore by their fruits you will know them. So if we are in Christ and Christ is in us we must bear the fruits of His Spirit in us.

We must know that we would not see evidence of the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives the moment we surrender our lives to Christ. A fruit starts from a seed and that seed contains everything for the plant to begin and produce more fruit. In order for a tree to yield fruit it goes through a cycle where it must be planted in good soil, it must be nurtured, it must have a light source; it must be watered until it reaches maturity.

Like a seed our spiritual growth takes time. We must be planted in good soil, nurtured, watered. We must begin the lifelong work of submitting all of our lives under the Holy Spirit’s work of our sanctification. We grow in knowledge of Jesus through His Word in the Gospel, we grow our love of Him through obeying Him. He said the one who loves Me is he who obeys My command.

We grow day by day in this holy love. We renounce old sin tendencies and repent. We die to our old selves and put on our new selves in Christ Jesus. We receive the purified new nature through the power of Christ’s strength.

May we all be fruitful in the Spirit to let our light so shine before men, so that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Amen.
