The Word of God Is Our Weapon in The Time of Trial (Ephesians 6:16-17)
“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:16-17)
We, the Christians, know that we have to read the Gospel, which is, the word of God, everyday. Most of us have a reading plan which is a good way to build habits of regular study, but often we don’t move beyond this phase.
Unfortunately a reading plan is a task oriented that has a start and a finish. This way drives us to seek completion rather than understanding. Simply reading a passage without understanding it with a desire to finish it means we don’t let the passage speak to us where we are.
When we walk away without an understanding of what we read, it leaves us feeling empty and dry. Many of us think that when we read the gospel we will be called good Christians. While others used to read it to either gain information to lecture people in bible studies’ sessions or sermons in the church, or to memorize the verses and repeat them to show people around them that they are pious and know the Gospel by heart.
But this is not the aim of reading the word of God. Rather we need to learn to read the Gospel as a personal message from Jesus to us. The Gospel is our mirror, we see ourselves according to the word of God, that is to say, we must adapt our lives to what we read, and ask ourselves whether we are as Jesus wants us to be or not.
We read the Gospel to discover the wisdom, the love, and guidance each passage opens up to us. We meditate in it seeking the way to be transformed and be in the image of Christ.
Some people say I read the Gospel ten times and I know what is in it by heart so I do not need to read it again. This is not true because the Gospel is indeed alive then it speaks to us with fresh messages each time we read it. The Gospel is alive and if alive it speaks anew, not some old message from time past.
It is a new fresh inspiration made just for us and where we are at that moment in life and our spiritual walk.
Brothers and sisters, reading the gospel is not a task or a requirement. It is a special time that we spend with Jesus to know the truth, and the way to receive the eternal life in us. It is a devotion time to know more about the mysteries of heaven.
Jesus wants our hearts. So if we read the Gospel and our hearts are not into it, we would not find what we are looking for. Jesus wants to spend time with us and speak to us through His words. Our time and our devotion should reflect that.
Being faithful in our reading, being faithful to seeking Jesus’ message to us will take us to new depths in our relationship with Him. We must continue to seek Him and He has amazing things to reveal to us as we draw closer to Him. Amen.
