Jesus Will Forgive and Purify (1 John 1:9)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9.)
We all recognize that we have an enemy, which is the devil. Jesus said that the devil came to steel, destroy, and kill us. We all know that Satan attacks us day and night and all his goal is to separate us from Jesus, our creator and our source of life.
The questions we need to ask now are, how does the devil do it? What are the ways and methods this enemy uses to attack and try to get us off the way, the truth, and the life, which is Jesus Christ? It is so very important to understand his methods because when we do, we can be on guard and ready to fight back.
Satan is after three important things in our lives. First, our unity with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Second, our discipleship to Him in order to fulfill His purpose in our lives. Third, our communion with all the members of the body of Christ, that is the church.
The sneaky way that the devil always use is planting in our minds a little notion of doubt, always in the form of a question, to what we read in the gospel or what we hear from the whispering voice of the Holy Spirit in us. In other words, he messes with our mindset or our thinking.
This doubtful notion that he throws usually attacks all three of our relationships in our lives. If we are not careful and stop this spirit of doubt he planted, this small seed will be having a deep root and grow up and can latch on to our thinking and cripple us, leading us to a complete separation from our Lord. We start to doubt to the extend of disbelieving His words and promises that we read in the Gospel.
One of the notions of doubts that the devil throughs to us is, did God really forgive you? When we do a great sin like, cheating, or stealing, or killing, we feel the sense of guilt that burns our feelings day and night. We feel we are awful sinners that God will never forgive us. We doubt the word of the Gospel that says if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us.
The devil starts to throw doubtful notions and feelings like how we who killed somebody emotionally or physically can be forgiven? He gets us to believe that God would not forgive us.
The problem with this feeling of unforgiveness is that it pushes us away from God. Accepting the idea and swallowing it will let the devil fills us with the sense of guilt that blocks the way for us to go to Jesus and confess our sin and let the Holy Spirit lead us to the second step of repentance to receive the forgiveness.
Unfortunately, as soon as we say yes to the devil, he quickly separates us from the word of life that we just read in the gospel and fills us with shame and depression. He knows if he can get us thinking these types of thoughts we will question God’s ability or willingness to forgive us. This will have devastating effects on our walk with our Lord. We would not be able to pray, to worship, read the Gospel because in our minds we stand condemned.
So after reading this verse today we can be confident that Jesus is not only able to forgive us but He is willing to forgive us if we confess our sins and repent, He is just and faithful to forgive us. Not only He forgives us but also purifies us to not sin again and be righteous. Amen.
