Jesus Came to Save the Lost (Luke 19:2–10)
“There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:2–10.)
The good news of the Gospel in the New Testament is that Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector, a rich and a successful one. He was rich but corrupt that many despise him. When he knew that Jesus entered Jericho, he was so curious to see Him and he climbed a tree just to catch a glimpse.
Jesus noticed his curiosity and He invited Himself at the house of a well known sinner. Zacchaeus knew that he was a sinner and he was not accepted by the people around him in the city. When Jesus called him by his name and invited Himself in his house, that made him feel for the first time not rejected but even honored. Who does that?
Jesus’ voice healed him and changed his heart at the same time. Jesus’ love and grace changed this rotten tax collector and sinner at the moment. What is the proof of his transformation? We read that Zacchaeus stood up and said, “Half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I’ve defrauded anyone, I restore it fourfold.” He saw his sin and his corruption and confessed them tacitly.
The other proof is that Jesus heard his confession and saw that it is a sincere confession from his heart and He immediately responded, “Today salvation has come to this house.”
Jesus’ grace and love go before each one of us. He wants to get us free from bondage of sin. Being honored by Jesus and had this opportunity to enter his life, zacchauos received Him in a moment confessing his sins as a proof to say to Jesus please help me not to sin again.
He grasped this opportunity and he did not waste the time. He knew it is a precious opportunity to be healed from greediness and to be set free.
We all must do like Zacchaues and grasp the opportunity that we have today to confess our sins, repent, and receive Jesus’ healing and be set free from any slavery and bondage of sin. Amen.
