Lay up Treasures in Heaven (Mark 10:17-21)

"Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” So Jesus said to him, You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ” And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 10:17-21.)

The rich young man was a promising potential convert. He came running and knelt before Jesus. He was so sincere and wanted to inherit the eternal life. It seemed he was a good man who followed all the commandments of the law. When he saw Jesus he felt there was still something he did not do to let him feel that he was not confident that he will enter the kingdom of God.

He asked Jesus the most important question anyone could ask: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” That young man had a legit question and wanted an answer to his deepest question.

Jesus responded to his inquiry by reviewing all the commandments. Jesus knew that he was a faithful man who wanted to please God and he did obey all the commandments. But why did Jesus go over all the commandments with the man? Because He wanted to draw his attention to something very new to him and serious in his walk with the Lord. Jesus wanted to confront him with something deep in him that would separate him from his unity with Christ, Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Eternal Life.

When the young man shortsightedly, responded, “All these I have kept from my youth,” Jesus looked at him with love and compassion. And that love compelled Jesus to be very honest with him. Jesus told him the hard thing: “You lack one thing. Go, sell all that you have… and follow me.”

Jesus did not mean that we all have to sell what we posses to have the eternal life, that is to say to have unity with Him and abide in Him. But the issue here is the hangup that this guy had with money. Jesus had touched upon his idol.

Jesus continued to explain his point in verse twenty-four, saying, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!”

The man’s face felt sad and walked away sorrowful, because he had great possessions. He came to Jesus seeking eternal life but walked away because he couldn’t let go of his temporary security. He felt safe when he had a lot of money. He could not believe that if he had not that money he would live happily and securely.

Jesus is asking for our hearts’ allegiance. You cannot hold onto both Him and money or any other idol for that matter).

There’s a lesson here for all of us. We can be good minsters, preachers, pay tithe, go to church, and feel loved by Jesus, but can walk away of Him if we face any trial like losing our money and feel unsecured. We can preach His name but our hearts would not let go of what owns it.

We all must be aware of any idol that posses our heart. Our hearts must be completely owned by our Lord and Savior. He will take care of us and we must put our trust in Him.

The disciples found it impossible for anyone to be saved and have eternal life if they followed this strict rule. But Jesus gave them the answer, saying, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”

What does that mean? It means when we receive Jesus in us we will be able to do in the Spirit what we cannot do in our human strength. When we have Jesus in us we will feel safe and we can easily trust in Him because we will live by the Sprit not by our flesh and human wisdom. Amen.
