The Love of The World Is Enmity with God (James 4:1-4)
“Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:1-4.)
Saint James is telling us that friendship with the world is enmity with God. Why? Saint John answered this question in his first epistles, chapter two. He said because for all that is in the world is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
We, the Christians, should not see some sins are worse than others. But the reality is, all sins separate us from Christ. There are not degrees of separation, we are either reconciled to God and are His true children, or we are stranger to Him, there is no in-between.
St. Paul declared in his epistle to the Romans, chapter six, that the wages of sin is death, that is to say, the consequence of all sins is death, whether in thought, word, or act.
We can deceive ourselves into believing that it is the really big sins we have to avoid, while ignoring deadly sins in our own lives. The truth is that all sins are wrong, all sins need to be confessed and all of us need to walk away from our sinful tendencies and through humbleness we confess our sins, repent, and walk in righteousness.
St. Paul told us in his epistle to the Colossians, chapter three, verse five, to put to death our members which are on the earth, that is to say, in the world, which are fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
He continued to say in verse eight and nine, to put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of our mouth, and not to lie to one another. We have to put off the old man with his deeds, and have to put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Christ who created us. Amen.
